Flooding Crisis At Texas Nuclear Plant and Fukushima

Dear Friends,

I am sending you an article of News Punch dated August 28,2017.

Confronted with serious consequences of recent typhoons and flooding in Japan,

we are led to think that the natural disasters taking place in the United States,

would be spreading worldwide in future, including Japan.

The flooding crisis at the Texas Nuclear Plant teaches us that the existence itself

of nuclear reactors is the top and real security issue.

We are reminded of the Unit 2 crisis of the Fukushima Daiichi. If an earthquake of intensity 7

happens there, the building of the Unit 2 could collapse, bringing about a nuclear disaster

that could make Tokyo uninhabitable in the worst case.

We cannot but shudder to recall that besides the Unit 2 building stands  a huge exhaust emission stack

(more than 130 meters high). It is already partially damaged.

If it collapses, Trillions of Bq of radioactive radiation could be released.

It is now obvious that Japan must consecrate all efforts to bring Fukushima under control,

and this very urgently.

With warmest and highest regards,

Mitsuhei Murata

Flooding Crisis At Texas Nuclear Plant Sparks ‘New Fukushima’ Fears

August 28, 2017 Baxter Dmitry NewsUS 0

Experts are warning the STP Nuclear Plant in Texas is unprepared for the unprecedented level of flooding in the area and claim the troubled nuclear plant could become the “new Fukushima” and contaminate the entire south of the USA.

Before Hurricane Harvey hit the area, STP Nuclear Plant officials claimed the nuclear reactor was prepared to weather the storm, with an article published in the Bay City Tribune in Texas boasting:

The plant site is located 10 miles inland and at an elevation of 29 feet, well above the reach of even a Category 5 storm surge. The plant was designed with watertight buildings and doors to keep emergency electric power and cooling systems fully functional. All buildings housing safety equipment are flood-proof to an elevation of at least 41 feet above mean sea level.”

An article in the San Antonio Current also debated the plants safety in the wake of Fukushima and made similar points about a hurricane storm surge – but also made an important distinction about inland flooding from the Colorado River, located about 2 miles away from the plant.

According to officials, the STP Nuclear Plant is built to withstand a worst case scenario of a 100 year flood on the Colorado River.

From the article:

STP spokesman Buddy Eller said the five-foot-thick, bunker-like concrete reactor domes reinforced with steel are able to withstand hurricane Category 5 winds and a 41-foot storm surge…“We’re built to withstand a worst-case scenario involving a hurricane with combined wind and a 100-year flood along that Colorado River,” Eller said. “…we’re located at 29 feet above sea level.”

While these pre-Harvey boasts from officials and nuclear plant spokesman may have sounded impressive before the storm hit, they now become truly disturbing.

According to the two articles and the STP spokesman himself, the nuclear reactor can withstand a 41 foot storm surge from the ocean – but being at 29 feet above sea level, that only allows for 12 feet of inland flooding.

Let’s take a look at the river level gauge on the Colorado River at Bay City, about 10 miles upstream from the STP nuclear plant:

The Colorado River at Bay City is forecast to surge 27 feet in the next two days!

And considering the river is currently 9 feet above what was forecast for this time, according to the graph, this is likely to surpass the all-time record crest of the Colorado River in the next few days. That “100 year flood” the plant spokesman talked about which happened in 1913 crested at a level of 56.1 feet.

The highest crest of the Colorado River at Bay City since the STP nuclear plant began operating was 24.04 feet in 1991.

Record flooding hit Houston after Harvey.

Is the STP plant designed to withstand a record flood? Judging by the brags and boasts coming from officials before Harvey hit, the nuclear plant is only designed to withstand a “worst case scenario” of 41 feet.

In the wake of the Fukushima nuclear crisis in Japan, it is worth keeping a close eye on nuclear reactors in disaster zones. As we learned from TEPCO in Japan, officials cannot be trusted to tell the truth when there is such devastation on the line.

They designed a nuclear plant to withstand a “100 year flood” on the Colorado River? That’s negligent and reckless for a nuclear plant. It looks like STP will be facing a major test in the coming days, and there is nothing anyone can do to stop it right now.

New Study Shows Full Radiation Risks Are Not Recorded

PRESS RELEASE – 7/27/17

Contact: info@fairewindsenergy.org

Today, the scientific journal Science of the Total Environment(STOTEN) published a peer-reviewed article entitled: Radioactively-hot particles detected in dusts and soils from Northern Japan by combination of gamma spectrometry, autoradiography, and SEM/EDS analysis and implications in radiation risk assessment. Co-authored by Dr. Marco Kaltofen, Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI), and Arnie Gundersen, Fairewinds Energy Education, the article details the analysis of radioactively hot particles collected in Japan following the Fukushima Dai-ichi meltdowns.

Based on 415 samples of radioactive dust from Japan, the USA, and Canada, the study identified a statistically meaningful number of samples that were considerably more radioactive than current radiation models anticipated. If ingested, these more radioactive particles increase the risk of suffering a future health problem.

“Measuring radioactive dust exposures can be like sitting by a fireplace,” Dr. Kaltofen said. “Near the fire you get a little warm, but once in a while the fire throws off a spark that can actually burn you.”

The same level of risk exists in Japan. While most people have an average level of risk, a few people get an extra spark from a hot particle.

According to Dr. Kaltofen, “The average radiation exposures we found in Japan matched-up nicely with other researchers.  We weren’t trying to see just somebody’s theoretical average result.  We looked at how people actually encounter radioactive dust in their real lives. Combining microanalytical methods with traditional health physics models,” he added, “we found that some people were breathing or ingesting enough radioactive dust to have a real increase in their risk of suffering a future health problem.  This was especially true of children and younger people, who inhale or ingest proportionately more dust than adults.”

Fairewinds’ book Fukushima Dai-ichi: The Truth and the Way Forward was published in Japan by Shueisha Publishing, just prior to the one-year commemoration of the tsunami and meltdowns. “Our book,” Mr. Gundersen said, “which is a step-by-step factual account of the reactor meltdowns, was a best seller in Japan and enabled us to build amazing relations with people actually living in Japan, who are the source of the samples we analyzed. We measured things like house dusts, air filters, and even car floor mats.  Collecting such accurate data shows the importance of citizen science, crowd sourcing, and the necessity of open, public domain data for accurate scientific analysis.”

Fairewinds Energy Education founder Maggie Gundersen said, “We are very thankful to the scientists and citizen scientists in Japan, who sought our assistance in collecting and analyzing this data. We will continue to support ongoing scientific projects examining how people in Japan and throughout the world experience radioactive dust in their daily lives.”

The complete peer reviewed report and project audio description by Dr. Kaltofen are available here at the Science of the Total Environment website.

Interactive data and the supporting materials are available here at the Fairewinds Energy Education website.

Nuclear War Without a War–Fukushima

Dear Friends,

I am sending you the article entitled “ Nuclear War Without a War” published in Newsweek ,May 24,2017.

It is extremely alarming as regards Fukushima, stating as follows:
“Fukushima disaster is totally out of control. This is a nuclear war without a war.
Fukushima radiation has contained entire Pacific Ocean,
Radiation detected in Europe and radiation at Fukushima reactors uncontrollable.”

The article refers to the elimination of the production of nuclear material altogether. In this respect,
it is in line with the Symposium “Human rights, future generations and crimes in the nuclear Age”
to be held in Basel next September.I have attached below relevent excerpts.

This article reminds us all the problems and confusions that have dishonorably characterized the
Tokyo OPlympic Games 2020.The editorial of the Asahi News Paper of June 2 criticized the lingering
disorder concerning its preparations and even pointed out the surfacing feeling of repugnance among the
Japanese.

The State of emergency declared around the Fukushima No 1 power plant after the 3/11 accident
has not yet been lifted. A responsible director of the Fukushima Prefecture told me on June 2 that
Fukushima had not yet been declared “under control”, its definition having not yet been agreed upon.

Under such circumstances,it is no wonder that there is increasing support for retreating from the Olympic Games
in favor of consecrating maximum efforts to cope with the aggravating consequences of Fukushima accident.

The Japanese should be informed of the crisis of the Unit 2 that could could trigger off an unimaginable nuclear disaster
if an intensity 7 class earthquake should occur on the site, as warned repeatedly by Mr.Shuzo Takemoto,
Professor Emeritus of Kyoto University.

Please allow me to count on your understanding and support.

Mitsuhei Murata
Former Ambassador to Switzerland

(Excerpts of the article)

To be sure, when nuclear goes wrong, it really, really goes wrong. There is huge increase in the number of cancer patients along with death rate of cancer patients in the world.
——–
The Japanese Government teamed up with Toshiba to build robots that could help clean up the highly radioactive site of the Fukushima power plant meltdown. It turned out the robots couldn’t function in such high radiation levels: 600 Sievert per hour, which could kill a human being in about two minutes.
———
Nuclear World must be willing to accept far-reaching IAEA surveillance on all their nuclear facilities, including unannounced inspections by IAEA authorities. By imposing similar requirements on all nations, we could eliminate the production of nuclear material altogether. Then, when nuclear weapons are dismantled and the primary nuclear explosive materials are made inaccessible, a nuclear-weapons, nuclear energy and uranium ammunition free world would be within our grasp.

Dear Friends,
I am sending you an article in the Counterpunch sent to me by Mr.Robert Hunziker.
Its following excerpts are convincing.
Japan will hold soccer and baseball events in Fukushima Prefecture for the Tokyo 2020 Olympics. This is not a spoof.
—–It is absolutely true Olympic events will be held in Fukushima Prefecture, thereby casting aside any and all concerns about the ongoing nuclear meltdown, thereby casting aside any and all concerns about the ongoing nuclear meltdown; after all that’s history.
How could anybody possibly have the audacity to bring Olympic events to the backyard of the worst nuclear meltdown in history whilst it remains totally 100% out of control? Answer: Japan’s PM Shinzō Abe and the International Olympic Committee (IOC).
Chernobyl’s Exclusion Zone is 1,000 square miles (off limits for hundreds, maybe thousands, of years) because of an explosion in one nuclear power plant that is now under control whereas Fukushima has three nuclear meltdowns that remain, to this day and into the unforeseeable future, radically out of control and extremely hazardous.
Please allow me to count on your understanding and support.
With warmest regards,
